American burnweed (also called "fireweed") is summer annual weed with erect, upright growth. Leaves have a distinctive white mid-rib. It is found in disturbed areas, particularly pastures and roadside turf following fire. Foliage may produce an unpleasant odor when crushed. It has recently become problematic in bermudagrass lawns throughout the southeast

Annual bluegrass is typically regarded as a winter annual weed with a bunch-type growth habit. Perennial ecotypes also exist and are found most frequently in closely mowed areas like golf course putting greens. Leaves are folded in the bud, have a boat shape tip, membranous ligule, and often have a wrinkled section near the middle of the blade. Annual bluegrass produces a panicle type seedhead that is triangular in shape, with bunched spikelets. Fruits are present throughout the life cycle, however the majority of the seedheads are formed in the spring. Chemical control options depend highly on application timing. Selective suppression of annual bluegrass and annual bluegrass seedheads has been reported following applications of plant growth regulators such as paclobutrazol (Trimmit), flurprimidol (Cutless), and ethephon (Proxy).

Annual ryegrass (sometimes called "Italian ryegrass") is an erect, bunch-type, winter annual weed that is somewhat purple/red in color at the base. This species has long, clasping, auricles and a short membranous ligule. Leaves have prominent veins on the upper surface, are characteristically glossy on the underside, and are rolled in vernation. Annual ryegrass produces a distinct, long, narrow terminal spike seedhead with alternate spikelets consisting of 10 to 20 florets. Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) produces a similar seedhead; however, annual ryegrass spikelets have distinctive awns while the spikelets of perennial ryegrass do not.

Annual sedge is one of the only true annual sedge species, thus making it easier to control. It is characterized by it's large, spiked seedhead. Annual sedge has a more clumpy appearance than other sedge species and emerges later in the summer than other sedge species as well.

Aggressive, mat-forming perennial warm-season turfgrass with a shallow root system and thick rhizomes. While leaves are rolled in the bud, the sheath is sharply creased giving a folded appearance. Bahiagrass is easily recognized by its "Y" shaped seedhead. This low quality turfgrass, with its light color and open canopy, is usually used on highway roadsides and other low-maintenance areas where erosion control and immediate ground cover are a major concern

Barnyardgrass is a bunch-type summer annual grassy weed characterized by its panicle seedhead, which is often purple in color. The base of the leaf sheath on barnyardgrass may have a purple color as well.  Leaves of barnyardgrass are rolled in the bud, and do not have a ligule. Barnyardgrass is often found in turfgrass areas that are poorly drained.
